The Joy of Post

Is it just me, or is opening a hand written letter from a dear friend not one of the most special moments? The dog eared envelope with the grubby post mark and hand written address instantly telling you the journey the letter has been on.

In the days of email and txt messaging, how often does anyone actually take time out to write anything? Many of you might ask... why bother? When you can instantly and economically say anything to anyone you want in the entire world via the wonder that is the world wide web, why bother with snail mail?!

The thing I so love about old fashioned mail IS the time it takes to arrive, IS the effort you have to put into it. Typed text has no imperfections, it has no personality and I think that a written letter has both personality and love.

This year I have been writing to a friend of mine serving out in Afghanistan and it takes a whopping 2 weeks for his letters to arrive, but when they do I savour every last moment of reading his life on paper. They have things called eblueys which is an electronic system for military out there and while we did speak via this and email, we always kept up letters too.

My point - pick up a pen, any scrap of paper and give it a go. You might just enjoy it!
